LWV INFO SESSION

Educate.  Advocate.  Empower.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley, a nonpartisan political organization, is one of more than 700 local Leagues nationwide encouraging informed and active participation in government, working to increase understanding of public policy issues and influencing public policy through education and advocacy.

Founded in 1946 as the League of Women Voters of Closter, the chapter expanded to attract members from Tenafly, Englewood, and Leonia Leagues.   By 1964, it included 11 municipalities in Northern Valley, and was renamed the League of Women Voters of Northern Valley (LWVNV).   Today we are gathered from 29 municipalities.

To get involved with LWVNV, please call (201) 316-7596 or email lwvno.valley@gmail.com

Voters Service

Voters Service is the heart of the League of Women Voters’ work to empower citizens to shape better communities.  Our focus areas are:

  • Conduct voter registration drives
  • Host and moderate non-partisan Candidate Forums
  • Provide nonpartisan election information about candidates and ballot initiatives as well as information about polling locations, times and absentee ballot procedures.

The LWVNV’s supplies information, to its Vote 411.org website, about candidates running for office in New Jersey’s General Elections. This website, launched by the League of Women Voters Education Fund in 2006, is designed as a “one-stop-shop” to provide nonpartisan election information about what voters will find on their ballots.

If you would like to help register voters, obtain information about candidates running for office, moderate or organize a Candidate Forum, the League of Women Voters of Northern Valley welcomes your participation.  For further information, contact lwvno.valley@gmail.com

Celebration of 100th Anniversary

The League of Women Voters was founded, in 1920, as a result of the struggle to give women the right to vote.

One of the leaders of that struggle, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, made her home in Tenafly from 1868-1887.

The LWVNV, partnering with nine local organizations, presented an event to recognize the centennial of women’s right to vote through passage of the 19th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. The program was held on February 10, 2020. This date coincided with the date New Jersey ratified the amendment 100 years ago. It was the 29th state to do so. 36 states were needed for ratification which took place six months later.
